The Thread, 2021
Fascinated by vintage machines that she can turn into graphic design tools, Femke Jurissen bought a Brother KH910 knitting machine. Hacking this machine unabled her to turn bits into knits; one pixel gets transformed into one stitch. She found the threshold between these two very exciting; the obsolete machine transformed into a vehicle for contemporary graphic design. As this machine is so easily hackable, she considers it as a piece of open source hardware. Femke Jurrissen discovered a whole community that exists around this one single knitting machine and slowly became part of it.
The Thread explores the communal spirit of learning a craft. By looping together knowledge she has gained thanks to this community, The Thread aims to feed knowledge back into the community again.
