Steve Bannon: A Propaganda Retrospective: Model, 2019

In the so-called ‘free world’ we always talked about PR or advertising, but for Jonas Staal since the emergence of terms such as fake news and post-truth democratic states have become a serious part of the propaganda debate. He analyses and deconstructs how propaganda works in a liberal society in his work Steve Bannon: A Propaganda Retrospective, which gives an overview of the artistic and political work of Stephen K. Bannon. Bannon, who is primarily known as a former campaign strategist and ideologist of Donald Trump, is also a filmmaker and had before the emergence of Trumpism already made various pamphletistic documentaries in which he propagated his violent white Christian economic nationalist doctrine. What Bannon’s work reveals is the importance of cultural imagination in establishing new political forms of power. For in propaganda art it’s not about sending messages in the world as it is: it’s about making worlds.
